How Do You Read a Safety Data Sheet? SDS, GHS, Labels
Safety Data Sheets aren't just for factories. Here's how to find one for a product under your sink, what the 16 sections actually mean, and the loophole that keeps most cleaners from needing one at all.
Your kid asks what’s in the bottle you just used to wipe the counter, and you flip it over. Five ingredients you recognize, one you don’t, and a lot of white space where the actual chemistry should be. You’ve googled the mystery word before. You’ve never once thought to ask: is there a longer document somewhere that has to tell the truth?
There is. It’s called a Safety Data Sheet, and almost nobody outside a warehouse or a lab has ever opened one — not because it’s a secret, but because it was built for a completely different reader than you.
Short answer: A Safety Data Sheet is a 16-section workplace document under OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard — required for employees, not guaranteed for retail shoppers. Start with Section 2 (hazards) and Section 3 (composition); they often disclose more than the bottle. Most brands post SDS files online voluntarily. The document that exists, and the reason you’ve never seen it
Every chemical product with a hazard classification — from an industrial degreaser to the same all-purpose spray sold at a grocery store — has an SDS somewhere. OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard requires it: a fixed, 16-section format covering identification, hazard classification, ingredient composition, first aid, handling and storage, exposure controls, and toxicological data, among other sections.
Here’s the detail that changes everything about how you should think about it: that requirement is about protecting employees who handle a chemical at work, not about informing the person who buys the same bottle at a store. A cleaning company’s staff has a legal right to see the SDS for the product they’re using on the job. You, buying the identical formula off a shelf, don’t have that same guarantee — you’re covered by a different, generally looser law: the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Federal Hazardous Substances Act, which governs what has to appear on a retail label, not what has to be disclosed in full.
So the same chemistry can legally live under two different disclosure standards depending on who’s holding the bottle — a factory worker or a parent at a kitchen sink. Most reputable manufacturers publish their SDS documents publicly anyway, since they already have to produce them for commercial customers. But nothing forces them to make that document easy to find, or to match it word-for-word to what’s printed on the consumer label.
What’s actually in the 16 sections — and which two matter to you
You don’t need to read all sixteen. Here’s the map, and where to spend your time:
- Section 1 — Identification. Product name, manufacturer, and recommended use. Skip unless you’re confirming you have the right document for the right bottle.
- Section 2 — Hazard Identification. This is the fast read. It lists the GHS pictograms, the signal word, and a summary of hazard statements. Start here.
- Section 3 — Composition/Information on Ingredients. The actual ingredient list, frequently with CAS registry numbers — often more complete than the bottle’s own label, especially for anything folded into a trade-secret “fragrance” blend.
- Sections 4–7 — First aid, fire-fighting, accidental release, handling and storage. Written for a workplace emergency, not household use — worth a skim if you’re curious, not essential.
- Sections 8–10 — Exposure controls/PPE, physical/chemical properties, stability and reactivity. This is where you’ll see occupational exposure limits — numbers set for someone handling gallons of concentrate daily, not someone spraying a countertop twice a week. Useful context, not a direct household risk score.
- Sections 11–16 — Toxicological, ecological, disposal, transport, regulatory, and other information. Section 11 (toxicology) is the deepest well of real data if you want to look up a specific ingredient’s studied effects.
If you only ever read two sections of any SDS, make it 2 and 3. Together, they answer the two questions that actually matter: how hazardous is this classified as being, and what, specifically, is in it.
The GHS hazard classes, at a glance
Section 2’s pictograms come from a fixed, internationally standardized taxonomy — the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling (GHS). There are nine hazard pictogram categories in total, and knowing the shape of the system makes any SDS you open instantly less intimidating:
Most household cleaners, if they’re classified as hazardous at all, land under Exclamation Mark (irritant, lower-severity acute effects) or Corrosion (skin/eye damage from concentrates), not the Skull-and-Crossbones tier associated with industrial poisons. That’s genuinely reassuring context — but it’s also exactly why the signal word matters more than the absence of a scary icon.
”Danger” and “Warning” aren’t marketing words
This is the part worth remembering longer than any single ingredient name. On an SDS — and on GHS-compliant labels generally — “Danger” and “Warning” are regulated terms with fixed meanings, not a copywriter’s word choice. “Danger” is assigned to the more severe hazard category within a given class; “Warning” is assigned to a less severe category in that same class. A product concentrate might carry “Danger” while the diluted, ready-to-use version of the identical formula carries “Warning” or no signal word at all, because concentration changes the classification.
And the absence of a signal word doesn’t mean “contains nothing of concern” — it means the product wasn’t classified into a GHS hazard category under the criteria tested. Those are two different claims, and conflating them is exactly how a shelf full of “gentle” and “family safe” language ends up sitting next to ingredients that would carry a real signal word at full strength.
The micro-lesson: the gap itself is the information
Here’s the one thing worth carrying out of this: if a brand can produce a detailed, section-by-section SDS for its industrial customers but makes it hard to find, or its consumer label doesn’t match Section 3’s ingredient list, that gap isn’t a technicality — it’s a direct measurement of how much that company wants you to know. The document already exists. Somebody at that company has already written the full disclosure. The only question left is whether they chose to let you see it too.
A brand with nothing to obscure tends to make its SDS one click away and its retail label consistent with it. A brand that makes you dig, or whose numbers don’t line up between the two documents, has already answered the question you were about to ask.
