Here is the short version, stated as carefully as we can. Lactobacillus reuteri is a gut bacterium. Work from the Erdman laboratory at MIT reported that supplementing it affected oxytocin levels, wound healing, and hair growth in mice. Those are mouse results. The “96% of humans have lost it” figure that gives this episode its title comes from popular health writing, and we were not able to trace it to a published human prevalence study - so treat it as a claim we are discussing, not a fact we are asserting. This is genuinely interesting research - and it is largely animal research. We are going to keep saying that, because the gap between “observed in mice” and “will happen to you” is where most health misinformation lives.

What is L. reuteri?
Deep in your gut lives a microscopic ecosystem more complex than most people realize. Among the bacteria that call your intestines home, one species that gets a lot of attention is Lactobacillus reuteri.
Popular health writing often says this microbe has nearly disappeared from modern humans. Treat that as a claim under review, not as settled epidemiology.
What do MIT and related animal studies report?
The published animal work reports associations between L. reuteri supplementation and the following, in mice:
- Oxytocin production (sometimes called the social-bond hormone)
- Social bonding measures in animal models
- Skin health and wound healing
- Hair thickness and growth
- Muscle mass and strength
- Bone density
Those are mouse findings. They have not been established as human health outcomes in trials we could cite here.
How is L. reuteri connected to oxytocin?
A frequently repeated figure holds that most of the body’s serotonin is produced in the gut. Gut-produced serotonin is largely peripheral and does not cross the blood-brain barrier, so “gut serotonin” and “mood” are not the same system - a nuance the popular version of this statistic usually drops. We previously stated a precise percentage here; we could not source it, so we have removed it.

Cardiologist Dr. William Davis popularized a long-fermentation yogurt method using L. reuteri. He publishes a specific organism count per serving; that figure is his, from his own materials, and we have not independently verified it, so we are not going to restate it here as though we had.
My personal journey (not a protocol claim)
I want to share something from my personal experience - I’ve been making L. reuteri yogurt myself using grass-fed organic milk, which is my personal preference.
